Ana Mendieta (instead of Arnold Newman, Herb Ritts or Duane Michals)

[Andreas, since I asked you if I could talk more about women and you told me I could choose any other female author mentioned by you on the syllabus, I've chose Ana Mendieta although I've also been through the work of the other three authors]

She was born in Habana the 18th of November 1948 and died at the age of 36 in NYC the 8th of September 1985.
According to the results of the trial, her husband didn't have anything to do with her death but it's still being a controversial matter in the Art world. Whether she jumped or he pushed her out of the window remains a mistery.

She was a strong feminist woman who showed this aspect in all her work.
She has a series of photographies very explicit about rape, women abuse and women body (whether is naked or surround by natural elements.

I am not very comfortable with some of her art myself since some of her work is crude and rought.
Her series of "Glass on body" (1972) are the ones I like the least because I don't understand the concept or the beauty of smashing parts of your body against a glass.
Her "Death of a chicken" (1972) feels absolutely unnecessary to me.
Nevertheless I should say her work clearly makes a point about women body mistreatment. Her photography "Rape Scene" (1973) is one of the most striking of all and was made after one woman was raped in her College.

I have chosen her because we also need to see this kind of art to open our eyes to this world's reality. Sometimes, even though we focus on the bright side of life, we need to be aware of the dark and shadows many people has to go through.

As for the photographies that I have chosen, "Autorretrato con sangre" might not be the best (technically speaking) but it is also one of the most shocking and represents the violence to women.
She made them after a performance where she ran away with blood running over her face and cleavage.
