Khadija Sayer

Khadija Mohammadou Saye, also known as Ya-Haddy Sisi Saye was born the 30th of July of 1992 and she tragically died the 14th of July 2017 during the Grenfell Tower fire in London at 24 years old along with her mother, Mary Ajaoi Augustus Mendy.

She was born in London and was Gambian-British.

Her work depicted Africa, specially Gambia, were her mom was born and, with that, she tried to give sense and understanding to the different culture and costumes emigrants have to deal with.
She did not have time to raise as a well known artist due to sudden dead

Most of her photography is in color but she also had a series of photographies called "Dwelling: in this space we breath". They are wet plate collodion tintypes. This is unique since the result cannot be replicated and the final outcome is non in the creators hands since it cannot be controlled. Almudena Romero helped her during the creative proccess.

She was trying to show what gives meaning to our lifes in times of challenges and despair using herself as an object and focusing on her body. She wanted to explore how trauma affects us and she used sacred objects from her home country.

I found very interesting what she captured during all of this interesting project and it's really sad that she had such a short life to explore all of this.

Despite of not being a religious person, I have always found interesting how some people need something to believe in to find themselves. Maybe the lack of some self-steem or the need of guidance even though we have everything we need around us to support us.

In addition, her effort to show her culture through photography in such a beautiful and personal way makes her really brave and her premature death has meant a big lost to the artistic world.

I have chosen this picture because of its peacefulness. The object she has placed in her ear reminds me of when we were children and used to use the shells to "listen to the sea" even though later on we learned it was actually our own bloodstream... Which for me also means that we and the Earth are one and should move at the same rythm.
